75-Foot Energy-Efficient Custom Sign

The Challenge

The City of St. Petersburg needed a highly visible gateway sign to welcome residents and visitors entering the city from I-275 near the Howard Frankland Bridge. The scale of the 75-foot, four-sided structure required custom design, structural engineering, specialized illumination, and coordination across multiple permitting agencies.

Our Solution

Thomas Sign provided the conceptual design, structural engineering, fabrication, and installation of the tower.

To reduce the energy requirements of the massive illuminated structure, Thomas Sign incorporated an induction lighting system that draws only 38 amps for the four-sided structure. Illumination included 18 250-watt induction lights, four multi-fixture LED lights at the dome, and 250 linear feet of LED illumination along the cornices.

The Results

Thomas Sign’s in-house installation crew erected the 75-foot tower on site. The completed structure is visible from as far as a mile away and was completed in less than five months.

The project also required permitting through four agencies, including three state-level agencies and one local municipality.
